The Young Turks: October 08, 2013

Cenk Uygur hosting from YouTube Space LA. Republicans seem to be living in an alternate reality. Senator Coburn of Oklahoma claims, “There’s no such thing as a debt ceiling.” Representative Schweikert of Arizona also downplays the potential effects of not raising the debt ceiling on the House floor. If the US government defaults on its debts, it will be disastrous for the domestic and world economies. A default most likely will not happen and the parties are in a game of brinkmanship and secretly acknowledge this real danger, but the true possibility of a default is growing. If a default occurs, it’s panic time. Anderson Cooper calls out Representative Paul Labrador on his show in a rare example of truly challenging an elected official from CNN. Republicans continue to lose ground in public opinion polling and are being attributed with most of the blame for the shutdown and its failed resolution. Scary Chart Time! Confidence in the US economy is plummeting. It shows a -35% change, the largest change since the 2008 crisis. A citizen suggests Representative Lee Terry of Nebraska donate his salary to charity as long as the shutdown persists. He refuses, claiming he needs it for his “nice house” and immediately has to backpedal. Speaker Boehner obnoxiously hammers home the talking point that Obama is to blame for not sitting down for a “conversation” and also reiterates that his position has not changed at all since the beginning of the shutdown. Michele Bachmann is convinced the End Times are upon us and this is something to “rejoice” over. This is a woman who led the Republican primary at one point in the last Presidential election cycle. Comforting thought, no? Ambassador Jenny reads #TYTLive tweets, Cenk answers, in a torrential Twitter Storm.
