The Young Turks: May 01, 2013

Sen Kelly Ayotte was harshly questioned about her no vote on the background checks bill at a townhall event by the daughter of the murdered principal of Sandy Hook.   Sen. Toomey accidentally told the truth about why Republicans voted against the bill; simply to oppose the President. Manchin pointed out that if it weren't for the NRA scoring the vote, the bill would’ve received 70 Senators in support.     James Inhofe has proposed a bill that would prohibit the government, except for the Pentagon, from buying more ammunition than the averages the Bush Administration set in buying bullets.  This comes from a conspiracy theory that the gov’t wants to keep ammo out of the hands of citizens that plan to protect themselves from the government.  As late as last year, even the NRA pushed this insane theory aside.   A Farleigh Dickinson poll showed that 29% of the country believes that an armed revolution against the government in the next few years will be necessary to protect out liberties.  More shockingly, 44% of Republicans think this. Three new suspects, friends of Tsarnaev, have been arrested in the Boston bombing case for getting rid of evidence from his dorm room after the bombing went down.  Supreme Court on whether or not they should get life sentences for their involvement.  Koch Brothers gathered a group of allies to meet and speak about their strategy to win the next election cycle.  Their new strategy is to ignore the social issues, but keep their bought politicians minds on deregulation and tax breaks.  They are looking to trick Latinos and young people to their side as they actually screw them over.  After the recent Venezuelan election, the Congress broke out into a brawl between the new opposition lawmakers and established ones.  Sen Ted Cruz thinks so much of himself in only his 1st term in the Senate, that he is floating the idea of running for President in 2016.  It turns out that he wasn’t even born in America, but in Canada.  His father is Cuban and his mother is an American citizen. After the rabid way Republicans went after Obama for not being born in America, the hypocrisy is astounding. Today is May Day, an international day to support labor.  Cenk talks about the rabid opposition Republicans have to labor unions and the great things they’ve provided to all workers.  CEO to Worker pay ratio from the ‘50s until today went from 20-1 to 240-1.  From 1981 until now, the top 10% got 96% of the economic growth, while the bottom 90% got only 4% of the growth.

A 16 year old girl has been arrested and expelled from her school for a science experiment that exploded while outside.  Cenk compares this to the West, TX fertilizer plant explosion that happened due to negligence, but the owner wasn’t arrested.  A study found that if light bulbs are marketed as environmentally safe and protecting the world, Conservatives are less likely to buy them.  Study showed that 90% of the ground turkey that is sold in stores contained traces of fecal matter.  Talk about how the FDA is allowing the food industry to self regulate. A woman noticed that a sick cow was being moved around on a farm with a vehicle, so she filmed it with her smart phone, from a public street.  Due to the new Ag Gag law, she was arrested for filming the agriculture process.  NYPD admits that it has quotas to fulfill, and they are simply incentives for the officers to do their job.  Due to the quotas, officers took part in Stop and Frisk. An anonymous writer posted an article about the fear and anger he and his wife are experiencing now that they are about to have twins to add to their 1-child family.  He also wrote about how much they didn’t enjoy the 3 years of their first child’s life.  Steve Nash is refusing to pay his ex-wife child support because she spends too much spoiling the kids.  A woman in Seattle was fired after being injured on the job and failing a drug test for marijuana.  She claimed that she doesn’t smoke, but gets 2nd hand smoke from her husband’s weed smoking in their trailer home.
